A recap of the longest meeting in the world!! In Trenton on Thursday January 8, Assembly Appropriations Committee advanced the over reaching e-bike bill, S4834/A6235. We hate this bill.
Jack from Hudson County Bike Walk gave strong testimony, “E-bikes are a solution, not a problem. And the numbers don’t lie. Over 99.99 percent of roadway deaths are caused by cars, not bikes, not e-bikes, not pedestrians.”
Gary La Pisa of the Insurance Council of New Jersey made a note of Section 4 of the bill—the provision that would classify e-bike users as pedestrians opening the door to PIP coverage. His concern wasn’t about safety. It was about who pays.
That did make us pause.
We oppose this bill. But we do NOT oppose protecting people on bikes. E-bike users, and all cyclists, deserve PIP coverage. No one should be left financially ruined because they chose a safer, more sustainable way to get around.
BUT this bill isn’t the vehicle for that protection. That fight is coming another day, possibly a February podcast episode…
The park advocates were missing…
We are slowly being killed by Auto Asphyxiation. Rather than provide relief, this bill deliberately complicates the safe word.
